Former Northland Group Exec Has a $230K Protection Dog

meandogWhen it comes to debt collection agencies, a collector’s bark is often worse than his bite. The same doesn’t hold true for at least one former debt collection agency owner, who has six “protection dogs,” German shepherds that are meek around their families but are trained to attack on command. According to an article in the New York Times, John Johnson got his first protection dog when he received threats as founder and head of the Northland Group. While the price of protection dogs is typically in the $40,000 to $60,000 range, Johnson had to fetch $230,000 for one of his dogs. Debt collection may be a dog-eat-dog industry, and a collectors can hound a consumer like a dog with a bone, but clearly being the top dog at an agency has its rewards.
